CAF Backs Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to Deliver AFCON 2027 Despite Construction Pressure

CAF says Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda remain on track to co-host AFCON 2027, though stadium and infrastructure work must accelerate.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe says Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda remain on course to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, rejecting speculation that the tournament could be moved because of preparation delays.
The three-country “Pamoja” edition is provisionally scheduled for June 19 to July 17, 2027. It will be the first AFCON jointly hosted by the East African neighbours.
Confidence, with a warning about deadlines
Motsepe acknowledged that substantial work remains on stadiums, training grounds, transport and tournament operations. He praised progress in Tanzania but said the region must accelerate delivery during the months ahead.
CAF’s position matters because major tournaments can be reassigned when hosts miss critical requirements. For East Africa, losing the event would damage public confidence and undermine investments already committed to facilities and infrastructure.
What success would look like
A successful tournament requires more than finished stadiums. The hosts must coordinate visas, border movement, aviation capacity, security, ticketing, broadcasting, team transport and accommodation across three national systems.
The joint-host model also creates an opportunity. If well managed, supporters could move between countries more easily and tourism agencies could market East Africa as a connected regional destination.
The legacy test
Large sports projects frequently promise jobs and development but leave behind expensive venues with weak community use. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will need transparent budgets and realistic post-tournament plans for every major facility.
AFCON 2027 can become a continental showcase and a long-term investment in youth sport. That outcome depends on meeting deadlines without sacrificing public accountability.
