South African police are investigating possible links after a ninth woman's body was found in Ekurhuleni in two months, intensifying fears over violence against women.
South African police have added the discovery of a ninth woman’s body in Ekurhuleni to a widening investigation into a series of killings that has unsettled communities east of Johannesburg.
The latest victim, an unidentified woman believed to be in her 30s, was found near a construction site in Dawn Park on Thursday, September 17. Provincial police commissioner Fred Kekana said she appeared to have suffered stab injuries, although forensic investigators had not yet confirmed the official cause of death.
All nine bodies were discovered across Ekurhuleni over roughly two months. Police have not established that every case is connected, but similarities among earlier deaths were concerning enough to prompt a public warning and a multidisciplinary investigation.
What authorities are saying
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said investigators were making progress in several cases but asked the public to allow police time to build evidence. Police also warned residents not to circulate graphic photographs or unverified claims, saying misinformation could spread panic or encourage copycat violence.
Missing-person advocates stressed that families do not need to wait before reporting a disappearance. Immediate reporting can preserve evidence and improve the chances of locating someone quickly.
A wider crisis of violence against women
The discoveries have renewed national anger over femicide and gender-based violence. Women’s organisations, faith leaders and community groups marched to Kempton Park Police Station, calling for stronger prevention, faster investigations, survivor support and public accountability.
Running clubs have also organised memorial activities for Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, a jogger who disappeared and was later found dead. The gatherings have become both acts of remembrance and demands for safer public spaces.
