Olu Jacobs, the veteran Nigerian actor and Nollywood pioneer, has died at 84. Afridiaspo looks at the career and legacy of the Lion of Lufodo.
LAGOS — Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84, closing a career that stretched from British theatre and television to the formative decades of Nollywood.
His family announced his death on September 16 and described him as the “Lion of Lufodo.” They also asked bloggers and social-media users to respect the family’s privacy while they mourn.
Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs in 1942, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His early career included British stage and television work, followed by international film roles. He later returned to Nigeria and became one of the most recognisable figures in the country’s expanding screen industry.
A bridge between theatre and Nollywood
Jacobs brought formal theatrical discipline, a commanding voice and a distinctive screen presence to roles that ranged from monarchs and chiefs to fathers and community leaders. His performances helped define the authority figures that became familiar to audiences across Africa and the diaspora.
His honours included the 2007 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, an Africa Magic industry merit award and Nigeria’s Member of the Order of the Federal Republic. Alongside his wife, actor Joke Silva, he also helped build the Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, extending his influence into production, training and mentorship.
The legacy he leaves
Jacobs belonged to a generation whose careers began before Nollywood became a global cultural force. His journey showed that Nigerian performers could move between stage, television and film while maintaining a clear connection to African storytelling.
Why it matters: His legacy is larger than a filmography. It lives in the professional standards he modelled, the institutions he helped establish and the actors who saw in him a path from local performance to international recognition.
