Ethiopian marathoner Ruti Aga has been provisionally suspended after the Athletics Integrity Unit listed charges involving the presence or use of methylprednisolone and alleged tampering.
A provisional suspension removes an athlete from competition while the disciplinary process continues. It is not, by itself, a final finding that the athlete committed every alleged violation.
A decorated road-running career
Aga won the Tokyo Marathon in 2019 and has collected multiple podium finishes across the World Marathon Majors. In January 2025, she set a course record of 2:18:46 at the Xiamen Marathon.
Methylprednisolone is a glucocorticoid used medically to reduce inflammation. Anti-doping rules restrict certain glucocorticoid use in competition because of potential performance and recovery effects. The details of dosage, route of administration, timing and any therapeutic-use documentation can be important in a case.
Why due process matters
The AIU’s notice starts a formal process that can include evidence review, athlete responses and a hearing. The tampering allegation is separate and potentially serious because anti-doping systems depend on accurate samples, records and disclosure.
Afridiaspo is reporting the status precisely: Aga is provisionally suspended and charged. No final sanction or period of ineligibility should be assumed until the responsible body issues a decision.
A wider credibility challenge
East African distance running has produced extraordinary global performances, but repeated doping cases have increased scrutiny of athletes, coaches, medical support and testing systems. Protecting clean competitors requires consistent testing alongside education that helps athletes understand medication rules and avoid preventable violations.
